Public Advisory from the Office of the President

The Office of the President provides this advisory to clarify the status of citizens from the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the United States.

The citizens of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) are granted special immigration privileges under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) with the United States. While they are not U.S. citizens, RMI citizens may travel to the U.S. without a visa, subject to meeting the necessary admission requirements. Once admitted, they may live, work, and study in the United States with no limit on the duration of their stay.

For evidence of legal entry, RMI citizens must possess either a printed Form I-94 or an admission stamp in their passport at all times, as required by U.S. law. Those admitted under the Compact must abide by terms set by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and obey local, state, and federal laws. Failure to show sufficient means of support or committing certain crimes, such as aggravated felonies, may result in deportation.

For more detailed information about travel, documentation, and eligibility, individuals are advised to consult the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website or contact the nearest Embassy or consulate.
