President Heine Meets with IOM Director General Amy Pope to Strengthen Cooperation on Climate Mobility and Migration

BERLIN, GERMANY – June 19, 2026 – On the margins of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum, Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine met with Ms. Amy Pope, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), to reaffirm the strong partnership between the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and IOM and to discuss shared priorities related to migration, climate mobility, and community resilience.

President Heine expressed appreciation for IOM’s longstanding support to the RMI and its contributions to national efforts due to it’s physical presence and active role in country. Discussions centered on to climate vulnerabilities of island nations and the complex socio-economic impacts of increasing Marshallese repatriation. President Heine also raised pressing national security concerns, emphasizing the urgent need to combat cybersecurity threats and the influx of illegal narcotics.

While the Marshall Islands remains committed to ensuring its people can continue to thrive in their homeland, both sides recognized the need for continued cooperation in areas including disaster preparedness and response, human mobility, community awareness initiatives, and other emerging national priorities. President Heine reaffirmed the Marshall Islands’ commitment to working closely with IOM to build resilient communities and ensure that Marshallese people are equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of a changing world.
