Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine Attends Opening Ceremony 

for 2024 Education Week

On Friday, February 16, 2024, Her Excellency Dr. Hilda C. Heine, President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, attended the opening ceremony for this year’s Education Week at CMI SGT Solomon Sam Basketball Court. 

Her Excellency Heine delivered empowering remarks on behalf of the RMI government highlighting the importance of Education Week. Recognizing the hard work of students and their accomplishments, President Heine reiterated the right of every child to education and emphasized the need to invest in our own people and to build resilience. In her remarks, she acknowledged those who continue to be involved in  children’s learning including parents, teachers, and caregivers. President Heine honored educators and teachers being the heart of education, but also challenged families and communities as a whole to do a little bit more to ensure that every child receives a quality education. As someone who is passionate about teaching, President Heine encouraged families and communities to support students by “sharing your stories, knowledge, and skills with young people and ensuring they are well rooted to their cultural heritage and identity.” 

In commemoration of the 2024 Education Week, President Heine announced several of her commitments during her second term as President, including: 

  • Reducing the number of school dropouts
  • Increasing the salaries for teachers
  • Revising scholarship priorities to align with government needs 
  • Bolstering support for private schools through practicums 
  • Seeking more opportunities for vocational training

Her Excellency concluded her remarks by expressing her sincere “kommool tata” for being a part of the special event, and looks forward to the successful outcomes of the Education Week activities. 

The opening ceremony was attended by Honorable Joe Bejang, Minister of Education, Sports & Training, distinguished guests from the diplomatic corps, His Excellency Ambassador Tanaka Kazunari, Japan Embassy in RMI, Charge d’ Affairs Lance Posey, US Embassy in RMI, Honorable Ladie N. Jack, Mayor of Majuro Atoll, Government Officials, students and teachers from both public and private schools, parents and community members.
