President Heine Meets with GCCM Managing Director Kamal Amakrane

BERLIN, GERMANY – June 19, 2026 – On the margins of the Berlin Climate Mobility Forum, Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine met with Mr. Kamal Amakrane, Managing Director of the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM), to discuss strengthening cooperation on climate mobility, climate resilience, and the unique challenges facing atoll nations. The meeting built on the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding between the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) and GCCM and explored opportunities to expand collaboration through programs that support vulnerable communities and advance innovative climate solutions.

President Heine highlighted the importance of ensuring that global climate mobility initiatives reflect the realities of atoll countries and discussed opportunities for greater Marshall Islands participation in GCCM’s Rising Nations Initiative. Discussions focused on emerging initiatives under the program, including a digital project aimed at strengthening resilience and preserving the identity and heritage of atoll communities. President Heine also encouraged GCCM to consider sustainable sea transportation as part of its climate mobility work, noting the critical role maritime transport plays in connecting island communities and supporting climate adaptation efforts.

The meeting also explored opportunities to advance climate resilience, sustainable development, and innovative solutions that address the unique challenges facing atoll nations and Pacific communities. President Heine and Mr. Amakrane exchanged views on ongoing international efforts to address the impacts of sea level rise and preparations for the United Nations General Assembly, including GCCM’s plans to convene a high-level event in New York focused on advancing global action on climate mobility. President Heine reaffirmed the Marshall Islands’ commitment to working closely with international partners to promote innovative solutions that strengthen resilience, protect sovereignty, and secure a sustainable future for Pacific communities.
