CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA — February 3, 2026 — H.E. President Hilda C. Heine met with Australia’s Foreign Minister, Senator the Honorable Penny Wong, as part of her Official State Visit to Australia, marking a significant milestone in relations between the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the Commonwealth of Australia.
President Heine conveyed warm Pacific greetings and expressed appreciation for Australia’s hospitality. She noted the historic significance of the meeting, which represents the first bilateral leaders’ engagement in Australia between the two countries in more than three decades, and described it as an important step in strengthening cooperation.
Discussions focused on shared priorities including maritime security, infrastructure and economic development, education, gender equality, policing and security cooperation, regional collaboration, and climate action. President Heine welcomed Australia’s continued support through programs that enhance connectivity, capacity-building, and sustainable development in the Marshall Islands.
President Heine congratulated Australia on its leadership in the Pre-COP process and emphasized the importance of advancing Pacific priorities in global climate negotiations. She also highlighted the Marshall Islands’ renewable energy initiatives to expand energy access and build resilience in outer-island communities. President Heine thanked Foreign Minister Wong for the constructive exchange and reiterated her commitment to strengthening the enduring partnership between the Marshall Islands and Australia.
