Majuro, Marshall Islands – H.E. President Hilda C. Heine welcomed H.E. Dr. Brian Jones, the British High Commissioner to Fiji, for a courtesy visit on February 24, 2025, at the Cabinet Conference Room. President Heine emphasized the enduring friendship between the RMI and the United Kingdom, noting that since establishing diplomatic relations 33 years ago, the partnership has grown, particularly in the areas of climate action, clean energy, and sustainable development. “We value the UK’s leadership in these areas and look forward to expanding collaboration in economic development, social progress, and higher education,” President Heine said.
High Commissioner Dr. Jones acknowledged the urgent need for climate financing to address the unique challenges faced by the Pacific region and recognized the importance of ensuring that donor support is aligned with the climate challenges of the Marshall Islands.
As a large ocean state, the RMI is committed to reducing emissions in the shipping sector, and President Heine expressed appreciation for the UK’s support for the universal levy on shipping emissions within the International Maritime Organization.
President Heine reaffirmed her commitment to strengthening the ties between the two nations and advancing shared priorities globally, particularly in the areas of climate action and sustainable development.
