H.E. President Heine Hosts State Dinner in honor of H.E. President Lai Ching-te

Majuro, Marshall Islands — H.E. President Hilda C. Heine and First Gentleman Thomas Kijiner, Jr. hosted a State Dinner at the International Conference Center (ICC) in honor of H.E. President Lai Ching-te of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on December 3, 2024. In her remarks, President Heine extended a warm welcome to President Lai and his distinguished delegation, expressing gratitude that their first stop was the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), emphasizing the deep connection shared between the two nations.

President Heine highlighted the long-standing bilateral relationship between RMI and Taiwan, forged 26 years ago in 1998, and the strong bond that continues to flourish today. She praised the shared values of both nations, including respect for democracy, the rule of law, human rights, and a rules-based global order. The cooperation between the two nations spans various sectors such as education, health, climate change, and cultural exchanges, strengthening their partnership over the years. President Heine underscored the significance of working together, especially as both island nations face the existential threat of climate change.

The state dinner also provided an opportunity for a deeper exchange of views on current international issues and future collaborations. President Heine reaffirmed RMI’s resolute support for Taiwan, including her call at the United Nations for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in global decision-making processes, particularly concerning the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. President Heine praised President Lai’s leadership on climate action and clean energy, emphasizing that both countries must stand together in the fight against climate change.

President Heine and President Lai exchanged warm toasts to each other and the enduring alliance between RMI and Taiwan expressing pledges towards a prosperous future and continued cooperation between the two nations. The evening was enriched with more than 200 guests and a notable entertainment performed by a local dance group called “Bukwon Labwod” hailing from Ailinglaplap Atoll.
