PRESS RELEASE
Majuro, Marshall Islands – On June 24, 2024, Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine welcomed His Excellency President David Adeang and his distinguished delegation for a courtesy visit.
President Adeang shared with President Heine some of Nauru’s endeavors towards the country’s economic development including plans to formally submit an application with the International Seabed Authority to begin seabed mining in Nauru. President Adeang noted the moratorium in place on deep-sea mining activities while studies are being conducted and emphasized Nauru’s position in the industry as a step forward in bringing benefits to the region while at the same time ensuring that risks are managed well. Deep sea mining would extract mineral concretions rich in rare metals such as manganese nodules.
In addition to discussing deep sea mining, both leaders exchanged views on regional airline challenges in terms of monopolized services and high airfares. President Adeang expressed Nauru’s strong support for enhancing regional transportation connectivity.
President Adeang’s delegation included Honorable Marcus Stephen (Speaker of Parliament), Honorable Jesse Jeremiah (Minister for Sports), Honorable Isabella Dageago (Deputy Minister), Damon Adeang (Adviser to the President), Sasikumar Paravanoor (Principal Secretary), and Santee Garabwan (ADC to the President). President Heine was joined by Honorable Bremity Lakjohn (Minister in Assistance to the President and Environment) Honorable Kalani Kaneko (Minister of Foreign Affairs & Trade).
