President Heine Joins AOSIS Leaders’ Breakfast Meeting on the Margins of UNGA 80

NEW YORK, USA – September 25, 2025 — H.E. President Hilda C. Heine began her day at 7:00a.m. this morning by joining fellow leaders of the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) for the AOSIS Leaders’ Breakfast Meeting. The meeting was convened on the margins of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly by AOSIS Chair, President Surangel Whipps Jr. of Palau.

The meeting served as a high-level platform for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to provide clear guidance on shared priorities: accelerating climate action, advancing ocean stewardship, and implementing the Antigua and Barbuda Agenda for SIDS (ABAS). The session also marked the adoption of the AOSIS Leaders’ Declaration on the Special Circumstances of SIDS, underscoring the group’s commitment to charting a course toward resilient prosperity.

During the meeting, President Heine emphasized the importance of aligning global support with the realities faced by small island states, noting the need for stronger systems to address their unique challenges. She underlined the urgency of ambitious global action on climate change, highlighting the need for both stronger commitments and more accessible financing to support adaptation and resilience.

President Heine also stressed the critical role of oceans for small island nations, pointing to the importance of new international agreements and partnerships that can strengthen sustainable ocean management and help build resilient blue economies.

President Heine reaffirmed the Marshall Islands’ commitment to working collectively with other small island states to advance shared priorities on the global stage.
