Baku, Azerbaijan – President Hilda C. Heine and Prime Minister Mia Mottley of Barbados held a productive bilateral meeting on Monday, November 11, 2024, during the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29). The meeting, which took place on the margins of the COP29, focused on deepening collaboration between the two nations, particularly in advancing climate action and amplifying the voices of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in international climate negotiations.
As two female leaders from SIDS, President Heine and Prime Minister Mottley reaffirmed their shared commitment to driving forward ambitious climate policies, including through their work at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Prime Minister Mottley reiterated Barbados’ strong support for the High Ambition Coalition’s COP29 Leaders’ Press Statement, which calls for urgent, bold action on climate change. She also reaffirmed Barbados’ support for the Marshall Islands’ leadership on climate issues at the IMO. President Heine underscored the Republic of the Marshall Islands’ support for the Global Solidarity Levies Taskforce and the Bridgetown Initiative, both of which aim to mobilize innovative climate finance for vulnerable countries.
