H.E President Dr. Hilda C. Heine Chairs High Ambition Coalition Leaders’ Meeting in New York

New York, NY — September 25, 2024 — Her Excellency President Dr. Hilda C. Heine attended the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) Leader’s Meeting on 25 September, urging fellow leaders to take decisive and ambitious action in the face of the escalating climate crisis.

In her remarks, President Heine emphasized the critical role of the HAC in driving global climate action and urged its members to lead by example. “The HAC is only as strong as its members, and their commitment to being at the forefront of leadership,” she stated. As the impacts of climate change intensify, she called on leaders to prioritize the urgent need for bold solutions.

Two key topics were outlined for discussion during the meeting. The first centered on 1.5-aligned Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with participants stressing the need for timely submission of ambitious, 1.5C aligned NDCs, which serve as the driving force of the Paris Agreement. Members highlighted the importance of detailed plans to transition away from fossil fuels and to sustainable energy and called on G20 nations—responsible for 80% of global emissions—to lead this charge.

The second topic focused on the urgent need to reform international financial institutions to ensure that resources reach those most in need. Island leaders shared the challenges faced by small island states, including the Marshall Islands and St Vincent and the Grenadines, in accessing finance as the costs of the climate crisis are rising exponentially.. Members agreed that it was time to move from conversation to action on World Bank and IMF reform, and for members to use their influence to shape reform of these institutions and encourage others to do the same.

President Heine concluded by expressing her gratitude for the convening and the coalition’s ongoing efforts, looking forward to the HAC’s 10-year anniversary in 2025.
