Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Milestone for Water Infrastructure on Majuro Atoll

PRESS RELEASE

Majuro, Marshall Islands – June 14, 2024 – Her Excellency President Hilda C. Heine, alongside distinguished dignitaries, gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the MWSC Project for Improvement of Water Reservoir at Majuro Atoll. Funded by the Government of Japan – an initiative towards enhancing water resilience and capacity in the region.

The project aims to augment the current water supply infrastructure by adding a new reservoir, contributing an additional 11 million gallons to the existing 36 million gallons. This expansion will bolster the overall capacity to 47 million gallons, significantly benefiting the approximately 42,000 residents of Majuro who rely on the Marshall Islands Water and Sewer Company’s distribution network.

After a brief halt in international cooperation resulting in delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, construction is now slated to commence next month with an expected completion date set for October 2026. This ambitious timeline underscores the commitment of both nations to address the country’s water issues through sustainable infrastructure development.

Minister of Works, Infrastructure and Utilities, Honorable Thomas Heine, provided the address on behalf of the RMI Government, emphasizing that “Today marks the realization of collaborative efforts between two nations, overcoming obstacles to ensure a more resilient water supply for our community”. Minister Heine further conveyed sincere appreciation to the people and Government of Japan for their generous donation towards the expansion project of the MWSC water reservoir.
